Yukio Kani is the Managing Executive Officer and Head of the Business Development Division of JERA, with responsibility for JERA’s investment and asset management activities across the full energy and power generation value chain. He also serves on the JERA Board.
Yukio’s current focus is on the synergistic development of new LNG and low carbon business models, particularly hydrogen and ammonia value chain development and offshore wind. Other priorities are continued strategic investment in overseas power and energy assets and a commitment to global talent.
Over the course of a 33-year career within Tokyo Electric Power and JERA, Yukio has promoted a full value chain approach as the best way to achieve energy security for Japan.
This philosophy reached a crucial milestone with the establishment of JERA in April 2015. As Managing Executive Officer of Tokyo Electric Power, Yukio played a critical role in merging TEPCO & Chubu Electric Power’s upstream and power assets into JERA.
In April 2016 Yukio was appointed Chief Strategy Officer of the new company. Over the next three years, he developed JERA’s strategic roadmap and completed post-merger integration work. During this period, he was also responsible for the establishment of JERA Global Markets, JERA’s LNG and Coal trading venture with EDF Trading. Prior to transferring to JERA, Yukio spent many years at TEPCO working on LNG procurement deals and equity investment around the world. In 2013, he was promoted President of TEPCO’s Australian upstream business with management responsibility for the Darwin and Wheatstone joint ventures.
Currently Yukio serves on the Asia Natural Gas & Energy Association Advisory Council and was previously a senior member of the Ocean Renewable Energy Action Coalition.A Tokyo resident, he holds an MBA from Columbia Business School
